Application Instructions

Evaluation Criteria:

1. Applicants should clearly define their proposed area of research, specify the central question or topic to be investigated, and present a method and design for completing the study within the award period.

2. Applicants should describe the project's potential for enhancing scholarship on Soka Education and/or for improving both Soka education practice and education practice more generally.

3. Applicants should demonstrate potential for research excellence in the field of humanistic education and for future contributions to the development of humanistic educational practice.

Interested applicants must submit the following materials:

1. Ikeda Center Education Fellows application/information "form."

2. Curriculum vitae.

3. Dissertation abstract. The dissertation abstract should summarize the focus of the accepted dissertation topic, including its contributions to the field. The abstractshould be double-spaced and no more than 200 words.

4. Dissertation prospectus. In no more than ten pages (double-spaced) please describe the question(s) or topic to be explored in your dissertation as well as the methodology and design for conducting the research. Delineate the context of the study by spelling out what has been done in the field and what remains to be done. Be sure to include a brief review of the most significant literature on this topic, while also assessing the significance of the project in light of existing literature.

5. Timeline. Include a proposed timeline for completion of your dissertation.

6. Personal statement. Please describe your career goals and aspirations in no more than 1,000 words.

7. Writing sample. Please include a writing sample of no more than 6,000 words from your academic work. (May be single-spaced.)

8. Two letters of recommendation. Provide two letters of recommendation from faculty, speaking to the applicant's promise and ability as a scholar. One letter should be from the dissertation director/chair. This letter should assess the contribution that the dissertation will make to the field of humanistic educational philosophy and practice as well as comment on the expected timeline. The other letter should be from a professor familiar with the student's academic work. Letters from faculty must be sent directly to the Ikeda Center and must be received on or before March 1, 2012 in order to be included in the review process of the application.

9. Graduate transcript. Please send a copy of your graduate transcript.

Please note:

1. Once your application is submitted, the Ikeda Center will contact you by email to acknowledge receipt. Questions relating to the application process may be sent to fellows@ikedacenter.org.

2. All materials, except for the writing sample and reference letters, must be double-spaced.

3. All materials, except for the reference letters and graduate transcript, must be submitted in electronic form and also in hard copy.

4. Everything should be printed on one side in English.

5. Materials will not be returned.

6. Late materials will not be accepted.

Accepting Applications from December 1, 2011 through March 1, 2012.

Notification of awards will occur on or about May 1, 2012.
