How might we incorporate the spiritual and ethical insights of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Walt Whitman into our daily lives?

Please join us on September 24 for a public talk by Ronald A. Bosco and Joel Myerson, authors, along with Daisaku Ikeda, of our new publication, Creating Waldens: An East-West Conversation on the American Renaissance (Sept. 2009).

In celebration of both the release of Creating Waldens and the 16th anniversary of the founding of the Center, Professors Bosco and Myerson will explore some of the humanistic themes from the book and share thoughts on their experience of engaging in dialogue with Center founder Daisaku Ikeda. Anita Patterson of Boston University will offer some opening reflections on Creating Waldens and the legacy of the American Renaissance.

Ronald A. Bosco is Distinguished Professor of English and American Literature and Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Albany, State University of New York, where he has taught since 1975.

Joel Myerson is Carolina Distinguished Professor Emeritus of American Literature at the University of South Carolina.

Anita Patterson is Associate Professor of English at Boston University.

About Creating Waldens:
In the provocative discussions that make up Creating Waldens: An East-West Conversation on the American Renaissance, Ronald A. Bosco, Joel Myerson, and Daisaku Ikeda explore the multifaceted, enduring legacy of Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman. In the process, the authors challenge us to do as these great figures once did—to look deep inside ourselves to discover our potential for growth, to encounter the natural world with reverence and delight, and to express ourselves with poetry and imagination. With great appreciation for the timeless gifts of the American Renaissance, Bosco, Myerson, and Ikeda encourage each of us, indeed, to create our own Waldens. (Dialogue Path Press, forthcoming August 2009)
